Making work at office a pleasure - The Ten Golden Rules to be followed
Posted on : 17-08-2008 - Author : Arnab Sen

Golden RulesOn an average we all spend 8 to 10 hours daily in our office. That makes it  more than 30% of the time. If we leave out  6 to 8 hours which goes in sleeping, we  actually spend 50% of our active time in office. Hence,  it is not very difficult to appreciate that if we want to be happy in our life, we have to focus and concentrate how we are spending this valuable 50% of our life when we are in office. It is very sad and unfortunate when many consider going to office as a burdensome job full of drudgery and consider Monday as the most dreadful day of the week.

There are others who are better off  but still  are not really able to enjoy their  work as they would have liked to. In short, we all would love to know ways and means to make our job in office, interesting and enjoyable.
I shall now share with you the Ten Commandments which if sincerely followed will enable you to do so.

1. Keep telling yourself  and get convinced that you are working because you love doing your job, and not just because someone is paying you for that. You have to train your mind to love your profession and your job. In case you are not able to do so,  then be convinced that the profession that you are into, is not for you and it may be worth to go for a change of profession, if you want to get rid of the daily “burden” of  coming to office.

2. Dont wait for anyone else to set a target for you for your job in hand, rather you set a target  for yourself, a self target,  which challenges your capabilities. As you achieve those set targets, you will get a sense of fulfillment  which will make you feel proud and will give you a kick to perform better. Such challenges bring  the much needed excitement in work and make your job a wonderful experience.

3. Impose self discipline not because someone else wants you to be disciplined, but because you want it. Putting a discipline on yourself,  will make you an efficient performer, which in turn will  give you a feeling of and satisfaction  make you feel good.

4. Learn to appreciate your colleagues effort and compliment him/her whenever you feel she/he  deserves it. Make this a habit. Such appreciations and compliments  help in spreading a positive vibration all around  and in turn help you to perform better.

5. Never keep any newly acquired knowledge just to yourself. Share it with others whenever you get a chance.  Be assured that sharing knowledge with others helps you to learn more, make better friends and promotes teamwork which again brings happiness at work.

6. Let the task in hand be the controlling  factor of all your action. Do the job because the situation demands that it should be done. Such an approach gives a purpose and meaning to your job.

7. Always  try to  keep yourself up to date with the latest knowledge in your field of  work. With the fast changing technology, if you are unable to keep yourself  updated with the state of the art technology, in whatever field you may be working, then you will soon become obsolete and out of place.

8. Develop a customer – vendor relationship  in every interaction. The next person in your department who takes over the task from you is your customer and you inturn are the customer of the colleague who passed on the job to you. Work to spread this culture in the office.  This will create a sense of professionalism in all your activities and help in spreading this culture to the external customer.

9. Try to be innovative in your job. Never be scared to try out new things. but of course, with a clear cut plan and a sense of responsibility. Through this approach you will be able to discover the creativity in you which will again make your  job interesting.

10. Last but not the least, develop a sense of ownership in whatever you do. If you want recognition then you have to learn to own a failure. The sentence , “This is not my job”  is that of a loser  and such a person soon loses all his interest in his job. Rather, let the sentence – “I am responsible for each and everything” be  your  policy statement. Develop an attitude to look for a solution to any problem and encourage others to do the same. Always ask “What I can do and how I can contribute?” . Such an attitude at work,  improves the efficieny and productvity of the individual and adds to the happiness factor in general of your  team. If the team is happy then you will be happy.

Lets start to practise the above “Ten Commandments” sincerely and seriously. I can assure you that your job in your office will never be  boring and tiring again, and every Sunday evening you will eagerly look forward to the coming week  and the  Mondays will be the most exciting day of the week.
